Em condi\u00e7\u00f5es normais, o SPD est\u00e1 em estado de alta resist\u00eancia. Quando a rede el\u00e9trica sofre descargas atmosf\u00e9ricas ou outras causas de sobretens\u00e3o de surto, o SPD conduzir\u00e1 imediatamente em nanossegundos, direcionando a sobretens\u00e3o de surto para o terra, protegendo assim os equipamentos el\u00e9tricos da rede el\u00e9trica. Quando a tens\u00e3o de surto passa pelo SPD e desaparece, o SPD retorna ao estado de alta resist\u00eancia, n\u00e3o afetando assim a opera\u00e7\u00e3o normal da rede el\u00e9trica.
