Choose the Right SPD Category Based on Application Scenarios

  • Main AC Service Entrance (Direct Lightning Risk): Install a Type 1 (Class I) SPD to handle direct lightning strikes (10/350 us waveform). If panel space is tight, upgrade to a Type 1+2 Combined SPD to eliminate separate secondary units and cut decoupling line costs.
  • Sub-Panels & Factory Cabinets (Grid Surges): Install a Type 2 (Class II) SPD (8/20 us waveform) to block indirect lightning and switching spikes. This is the industrial standard for standard distribution loops, perfectly covered by our flagship JUSPD-40AC series.
  • Solar PV Arrays & Storage (High-Voltage DC): For solar combiners, inverters, and energy storage systems (ESS), utilize specialized Solar DC Type 2 SPDs rated up to DC 1000V/1500V (such as our JRSPD-40DC series) to manage continuous DC voltage fluctuations.

Choose the Right SPD Based on Test Waveforms

Surge protective devices are engineered and tested under different lightning simulation currents. Selecting the right waveform ensures your equipment can withstand the actual energy surge:

  • 10/350 us Waveform (Direct Strike Protection): This waveform represents a fast rise time with a long, high-energy decay, simulating a direct lightning strike. It delivers massive kinetic energy, meaning you must choose a Type 1 or Type 1+2 Combined SPD for main entrance panels to survive this impact.
  • 8/20 us Waveform (Indirect Strike Protection): This waveform features a shorter duration and lower energy profile, simulating indirect lightning induction or internal grid switching spikes. For standard downstream protection in sub-panels, an 8/20 us rated Type 2 SPD (such as our JUSPD-40AC or JRSPD-40DC series) provides the optimal, cost-effective defense.

Match Key Electrical Parameters (Uc, In, Imax, Up)

  • Uc (Max Continuous Operating Voltage): Must be higher than your nominal system voltage. For instance, standard low-voltage AC panels require AC 275V/385V, while solar tracks need DC 1000V or 1500V.
  • In / Imax (Discharge Capacity): Look for a balanced rating. For general industrial sub-panels, a 40kA maximum discharge current (Imax) under an 8/20 us wave—like our flagship JUSPD-40AC—is the standard benchmark.
  • Up (Voltage Protection Level): This defines the residual voltage left after a surge. A lower Up provides tighter, safer protection for downstream electronics like PLCs.

Evaluate Manufacturing Scale and Certifications

  • Standards Compliance: For international bidding and grid acceptance, ensure the SPDs are certified to IEC 61643-11 (for AC power) or IEC 61643-31 (for Solar PV).
  • Production Capability: Partnering directly with a factory that operates 10+ advanced manufacturing lines guarantees optimal EXW pricing, robust batch-to-batch quality control, and reliable lead times for large B2B orders.

What is an SPD in an electrical system?

SPD stands for Surge Protective Device. It is an essential component designed to protect electrical installations, sensitive electronic equipment, and automated systems from transient overvoltages (surges).

How Does an SPD Work?

  • Normal Conditions (High Impedance): Under standard operating voltage, the SPD maintains a high-impedance state, acting as an open circuit. It remains completely passive and does not affect the system’s performance.
  • Surge Event (Low-Impedance State): When a transient overvoltage occurs due to lightning or switching operations, the SPD’s internal protective components, such as metal oxide varistors (MOVs), respond rapidly and switch to a low-impedance state. The surge current is then diverted through the protective bonding and earthing path, while the residual voltage is limited to the SPD’s voltage protection level (Up), helping protect downstream equipment.

What is the difference between Type 1, Type 2, and Type 1+2 SPDs?

Type 1 SPDs handle heavy direct lightning (10/350 μs); Type 2 shields against induced and switching surges (8/20 μs); while Type 1+2 combines both into a single unit to deliver ultimate heavy-duty protection with low residual voltage, eliminating the need for space-consuming decoupling.

How to Choose the Right SPD for Solar PV Systems?

DC Side (Solar Panels to Inverter)

  • Must use a dedicated PV SPD (complying with IEC 61643-31). Ensure its maximum continuous operating voltage (Ucpv) is at least 1.2 times the maximum open-circuit voltage (Voc) of the solar string to handle continuous high DC voltage safely.

AC Side (Inverter to Grid)

  • Select an SPD with a suitable Uc rating for the system voltage, such as 230/400 V AC. Use a Type 1 or Type 1+2 SPD at the service entrance where lightning current protection is required, and use a Type 2 SPD on the AC side of the inverter for protection against induced lightning and switching surges.
