JUTRION Type 2 surge protective device is suitable for 50/60Hz power systems with a rated voltage of 400V AC or below, including IT, TT, TN-C, TN-S, and TN-CS power systems. It helps protect electrical equipment from direct and induced lightning surges, switching surges, and transient overvoltages, as well as other transient overvoltages.
This surge protective device is available with maximum discharge current options of 20kA, 40kA, 60kA, and 80kA. It is designed according to IEC Class II requirements, offering reliable performance and a cost-effective solution.

Q: How is a Type 2 surge protective device installed?
A: Connect the live wire to L, the neutral wire to N, and the earth wire to PE. The neutral and live wires are connected in parallel at the power incoming side, and the earth wire should be connected to the grounding system with a short and straight cable.
Q: What is a Type 2 surge protective device?
A: It handles the residual surge after the Type 1 SPD discharges the main lightning surge energy. It also suppresses switching overvoltages and clamps the surge voltage to a safe range, providing secondary protection for terminal sensitive equipment.
Q: What are the current ratings of a Type 2 surge protective device?
A: Common nominal discharge current ratings are 5kA–40kA, and common maximum discharge current ratings are 50kA–100kA.
Q: Can a Type 2 SPD protect against direct lightning strikes?
A: No. A Type 2 SPD is mainly used for induced lightning surges, residual surges, and switching overvoltages. Its energy capacity is smaller and cannot withstand the very high current of a direct lightning strike. If direct lightning current enters the system, the Type 2 SPD may be punctured or burned out.
Q: Why is a Type 2 SPD still needed after installing a Type 1 SPD?
A: A Type 1 SPD is responsible for discharging very high lightning energy and diverting high current. However, the residual voltage can still be high and may still damage electrical equipment. After installing a Type 2 SPD, the residual voltage can be reduced to a safer range.
Main Structure and Working Principle:
In a three-phase four-wire system, three phase lines and one neutral line are each connected to a protective device to ground. Under normal conditions, the SPD is in a high-resistance state. When the power grid experiences lightning strikes or other causes of surge overvoltage, the SPD will immediately conduct within nanoseconds, guiding the surge overvoltage into the ground, thereby protecting the electrical equipment on the power grid. When the surge voltage passes through the SPD and disappears, the SPD returns to a high-resistance state, thus not affecting the normal operation of the power grid.
